Claude, TX
Claude, TX is a small Texas Panhandle town part of the Amarillo Metropolitan Statistical Area located in the zip code 79019. It is 30 miles east of Amarillo in Armstrong County and, as of 2022, consists of 1,184 residents. It has been slowly shrinking in size and continues forward on the downslope.
Claude Independent School District comprises two schools: Claude Elementary and Claude High School. The schools teach grades K through 12 and serve about 300 students. The district is located in Armstrong County, which covers 914 square miles of land in the Texas Panhandle and was established in 1876 and reorganized in 1890.
Tule Canyon, an amazing beauty in itself, is to the south of Claude is where Spanish conquistador Francisco Coronado trekked through in the 16th century. The town came to be known as Armstrong City due to the numerous ranches in the area bearing the Armstrong name until 1887, when it was renamed after the engineer of the first train to travel through the area on the Fort Worth and Denver Railway.
When it was up for election, the county seat was being voted on between Claude and Washburn. Claude won after Charles Goodnight, former owner of the JA ranch, cast the winning vote.
